World Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Championships Isles of Scilly 2018

PGRC Men’s and Ladies crews will be competing alongside approximately 300 other crews in the World Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Championships in Isles of Scilly from Friday 4 May to Sunday 6 May 2018. This is one of the first competitive Gig Racing events of the season, and is also the highlight for many competitors.

Our Racing Gig “Isabelle” will be taken to Penzance in Cornwall on 25 April for shipping to Hugh Town on St Marys on the isles of Scilly.

The crews will travel on Friday 4 May on the ferry Scillonian 3 to St Marys.  The weekend will start Friday lunch time with the wedding of our gig rowing friends Allard and Tigger! They are getting  married on St Marys Island surrounded with many friends from the gig rowing community, I’m sure there will be many gigs on the water to mark this event, we may even go island hopping with them!

The Friday evening racing starts with the ladies and men’s veterans races, well over 100 gigs on one semi-circular starting line racing for 30 minutes back to the beautiful harbour at Hugh town on St Marys.

Saturday morning starts with the long race once again, but this time for the crews of the main championship. This is another 30-minute race with about 140 gigs starting at once and stretching out towards the finish line. This race sets the starting positions for the heats.

Each heat consists of 12 gigs who finished the long race together. The crews race in a straight line from the island of Tresco to Hugh town harbour, this will be fiercely competitive, as the first 2 gigs across the finish line go up a group, and the last 2 go down a group in the following heats.
The heats will be run again Sunday morning with the final in the afternoon to decide their placing in the championship. It is traditional for all of the gigs to raft up and salute the winners of the final heat by raising their oars as the winners complete. It’s a real social event with more than a drop of port consumed when the racing has finished!

We will provide regular updates on racing and positions of our crews throughout the weekend on our facebook page ‘Poole Gig Rowing Club’ and the PGRC ‘YouTube’ channel.

If you enjoy watching our progress, YOU could be part of our race crews next year, so why not get in-touch and come rowing with us, it could be the best thing you do this year!
